Liverpool have finalized a deal for Fabio Carvalho which will see the exciting winger join Fulham for €5m (£4.17m) plus add-ons this summer, ending a chase the club had failed to complete the day of the most recent transfer window deadline.

Carvalho was set to swap west London for Merseyside in January after negotiations between the two sides eventually resulted in an agreement on an £8.4m fee – Fulham rejected the opening offer from Liverpool of £5million – but ultimately time ran out for the transfer to be rubber. – stamped, largely due to the complex nature of the talks. However, Jürgen Klopp never lost his interest in the 19-year-old and, with his contract ending this summer, was determined to sign him before he became a free transfer and therefore hugely attractive to rival bidders.

It was relatively easy to arrange given that Carvalho had agreed personal terms with Liverpool, as well as a medical, when he appeared set to join them just over two months ago. He will now do so on July 1 – when his contract with Fulham expires – with the transfer due to be officially announced next month. The additional payments will be in the region of €2.7m (£2.25m), with Liverpool also agreeing a 20% selling fee.

Carvalho, who can also operate as an attacking midfielder, was born in Portugal but is an England Under-21 international. He joined Fulham’s academy aged eight and after making his debut in a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in September 2020, quickly became a first-team regular. He has made 31 appearances for Marco Silva’s side in all competitions this season, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists and could well face Fulham next season as they look set for an immediate return to the Premier League in as championship champions. They are currently top of the division, five points ahead of second-placed Bournemouth and 17 points clear of third-placed Huddersfield.

Carvalho’s contract with Liverpool runs until 2027 and he is expected to be on a pre-season tour of the Far East ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.
