Starter Ian Anderson pitched five scoreless hitting innings to inspire the Atlanta Braves to a 2-1 advantage over the Houston Astros in the 2021 World Series, winning 2-0 in Game 3 on Friday.

The 23-year-old wowed the crowd in five innings, three marches and four strikeouts as Atlanta hosted a World Series game for the first time since 1999.

Anderson only became the second rookie to pitch at least five clean innings in a World Series game – the other being Jeff Tesreau in 1912.

Anderson was then pulled over by Brian Snitker as he turned to the reliever box to start the sixth inning.

However, the decision was justified after an impeccable night for the Braves reliever box, with four scoreless innings, two hits and no walks. Closer Will Smith recovered the save with a scoreless 9th.

Houston starter Luis Garcia also started well, allowing just one run while striking out six catches in 3.2 innings, but suffered loss.

Relievers AJ Minter and Luke Jackson carried the non-hitter into the 8th before a bloop base hit Aledmys Diaz’s bat past left fielder Eddie Rosario cost the Braves a chance to become the second team in the history of the World Series to launch a non-hitter.

Atlanta scored in the 3rd when Austin Riley scored an RBI brace down the left field line to score Rosario.

The rest of the night was a single run, with Travis d’Arnaud providing much needed insurance with a monster 437-foot home run down midfield in the late 8th to bring the score to 2-0.
