Life-size sculpture of Jesus found after being stolen from Illinois grave | St. Louis News Headlines

WAYNE COUNTY, Illinois (KMOV.com) – A life-size copper sculpture of Jesus has been found after it was stolen from a grave in Wayne County, Illinois.

The sculpture was declared stolen on June 30, 2021 from a grave in Poplar Creek Cemetery, near the Marion County line. Now, six months later, the sculpture was found on Tuesday evening.

Wayne County Sheriff Chris Otey said their investigation led them to a house about 10 miles from Rinard, Illinois cemetery. The sculpture of Jesus was found in the woods under a heap of brush.

Police said one person admitted to taking the sculpture during an interview and is currently in detention. The owner of the statue plans to return it to its proper place in the cemetery.

Wayne County is located east of Mount Vernon and south of Effingham. It is approximately 110 miles east of St. Louis.
