Legendary horse trainer Bob Baffert has been suspended by the California Horse Racing Counciljust a day after the Kentucky Court of Appeals denied his motion for a 90-day suspension for Medina Spirit’s positive medication test after last year’s Kentucky Derby.

The CHRB released a statement on Saturday announcing its decision which, in addition to upholding the suspension effective Monday, will also bar it from being involved in the training of any horse previously in its care and any ring under the jurisdiction of the CHRB. CHRB, FOX11 reported.

“Because the suspension is longer than 60 days, under CHRB rules, for the duration of the suspension, Mr. Baffert will be banned from all venues under the jurisdiction of CHRB and Mr. Baffert will not be permitted to be involved. in the training of horses that have previously been in his care,” the statement read. “Any coach who may request stalls in anticipation of a transfer will be required to fully comply with all applicable restrictions.”

Ahead of the announcement, signage outside Baffert’s barn in Santa Anita was removed as part of a CHRB rule that requires any coach suspended for 60 days or more to be banned from all CHRB-licensed facilities. the CHRB.

The Hall of Fame trainer’s suspension is the result of medication violations involving some of his horses, including Medina Spirit. The colt finished first in the 2021 Kentucky Derby and tested positive post-race for the corticosteroid betamethasone, which is not allowed in Kentucky, on race day. Medina Spirit was later disqualified.

A judge ruled on Friday that his 90-day suspension would stand and take effect Monday as scheduled after the court found “no determination on the merits of Baffert’s claims of error.”
