Leftists accuse each other after record month of murders of women

Spain’s ruling Social Democrats and the left-wing Podemos party have blamed themselves after the country recorded a record number of murders of women in December.

Spain’s Equality Minister Irene Montero, a member of the left-wing populist Podemos party, called for a crisis committee earlier this month after announcing that five women were murdered in December following gender-based violence, a number which rose to eight earlier this week. Wednesday when the meeting took place.

Since the meeting, three more women have been killed across the country, including an almost nine-month pregnant woman in Escalona who was stabbed to death by her former partner, bringing the total to eleven, a record number.

The Secretary of State for Equality and the Fight against Gender Violence, Ángela Rodríguez Pam, another member of Podemos, blamed a “failure of all the institutions, placing the responsibility on the Ministry of the Interior, which contributes to the Global Gender-Based Violence Case Monitoring System (VioGén), which monitors women at risk of violence.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, a member of Spain’s Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), later announced that the police would do more to protect the more than 30,000 women in vulnerable situations on VioGén, in particular the 723 known to be at high risk of harm, El Mundo reports.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles, meanwhile, reacted to criticism from Podemos and spoke out on the controversial ‘Only Yes is Yes’ law which has seen reductions in the sentences of convicted sex offenders and saw some freed. . The law was originally designed so victims of sexual assault simply needed to say they weren’t consenting, rather than prove the abuse or intimidation.

“I don’t agree with what Podemos is saying and I have to tell you with the greatest respect that perhaps the law of yes is yes has not given an adequate response to the situation we are experiencing,” he said. said Minister Robles.

Robles added that the law “has a very good philosophy, which is to protect women, but when we end the year with this situation, in which there are more people released from prison than we would like and when we see that the violence is skyrocketing, it is not good to blame anyone and we all have to be critical of ourselves, something is wrong and we all have to take our share of responsibility.
