Left-wing anti-Brexit MEP calls Orban a ‘traitor’ over Ukraine

Anti-Brexit member of the European Parliament and former Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt has called Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán a “traitor” for suggesting the war in Ukraine would end if arms supplies were stopped.
Verhofstadt, well known in the UK for his vehement anti-Brexit views – openly calling Brexit voters “stupid” for voting to leave the European Union – criticized Prime Minister Orbán this week following a recent interview he gave on Ukraine.
“No other word for it… Orbán is a traitor!” Verhofstadt said on Twitter in reaction to Prime Minister Orbán’s comments in a recent interview about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Orbán told Hungarian media that the war in Ukraine could last “a long time”, warning: “This danger is possible. At the same time, Ukraine can only continue to fight as long as the United States supports it with money and weapons. If Americans want peace, then there will be peace.
“We support and help Ukraine, we have an interest in the survival of a sovereign Ukraine and we have an interest that Russia does not pose a threat to European security. However, we have no interest in giving up all our economic relations with Russia,” Orbán added.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry also criticized Prime Minister Orbán for his remarks, issuing a statement claiming that Orbán was politically myopic, saying, “After all, Ukraine’s defeat in the war, which Viktor Orbán indirectly calls, would lead to a threat of Russian aggression against Hungary and the Hungarian people.
An assistant professor of European military history in Finland recently suggested that without the supply of American arms, Ukraine might not exist as a country.
“It was essential to Ukraine’s survival. Without US arms deliveries, Ukraine would no longer exist. Modern Western weapons technology has forced Russia to retreat on multiple fronts,” said academic Markku Salomaa.
Orbán, for his part, argued at his year-end international press conference, a transcript of which was seen by Breitbart London, that Hungary “should definitely stay out of the war, in part because of many Hungarians live in this neighboring country”. country, and partly because war is always bad; people are dying every day, and hundreds of Hungarians have already died in this war, having been conscripted into the Ukrainian army.
“The Hungarian point of view is that if you want to avoid participating in a war, don’t get carried away,” explained the Hungarian leader.
“I think most of Europe is already in this war, having been dragged into it. Anyone who supplies weapons is in this war – at least to the ankles. Anyone who trains the soldiers of one of the warring parties is knee-deep in it, and anyone who not only trains individual soldiers but also provides operational or leadership training is knee-deep in warfare. And whoever fully finances not only the military expenditure but also the running costs of the state of one of the warring parties – as the European Union is currently doing to the tune of 18 billion euros – is at war until neck,” he claimed.
“Hungary has – despite strong international pressure – managed to stay out of it all and maintain the position that what is needed is an immediate ceasefire, immediate peace talks and the peace itself. Along with all this, we fulfilled our human and Christian duty to help people in need and – although it was not our war – as soon as it broke out we launched the largest humanitarian operation ever carried out by Hungary in order to help the Ukrainians,” he insisted.
