Texas dad Eddie Chelby shared Saturday’s ‘Cross Country’ school safety precautions with Lawrence Jones after he went viral for taking matters into his own hands while standing guard outside his child’s school in Killeen, Texas.

EDDIE CHELBY: I just knew that with the experience that I have in the military for 11 years and then I’m actually in private security right now, just volunteering in your own community is one of the greatest things anyone can do. And the impact I could have had at that time for people in my area to give them some peace of mind and security feeling in the last days of school it was the easiest thing to do. And especially for me, I was available and I wanted to be there.

I think it all sort of starts from the bottom up, but we also need help from the top down, whether it’s raising or reallocating budgets to increase the security measures who are in those schools right now or if he is looking for third parties to go and do a security assessment. A lot of these things are going to come from state funding levels, federal funding, and we need help from both sides right now.
