The Los Angeles Police Department released body camera footage of an incident that led to the death of an innocent teenager as officers opened fire on a suspect.
Valentina Orellana-Peralta, 14, was in the locker room at the Burlington Coat Factory in North Hollywood on December 23, when a bullet hit her through drywall allegedly discharged by an officer who shot a suspect.
Images, which were posted on the force’s YouTube channel, show officers responding to reports that a man was attacking people in the store.
The suspect, Daniel Elena Lopez, can be seen picking on two women, one of whom he dragged down the aisles as she tried to crawl.
A number of people had reported seeing the man using a bicycle lock as a weapon, which was later recovered from the scene.
He was first seen on CCTV entering the store with a bicycle while tightening the lock, seemingly disoriented, before attacking a woman on the escalator who managed to escape his grip.
The man left the store for about 90 seconds, police said, then returned to hit another woman with the bike lock and attempted to drag her to the locker room while she was covered in blood.
Bodycam footage shows the LAPD then entering the store and opening fire on Lopez, who is hit by a bullet.
He died at the scene.
The footage also shows the whereabouts of Valentina Orellana-Peralta – hidden in the locker room with her mother – and her closeness to the incident.
“At this preliminary stage of the investigation, it is believed that the victim was hit by one of the bullets fired by an officer at the suspect,” Police Captain Stacy Spell said in the posted video.
The force believes the bullet bounced off the ground and through the drywall, killing the teenager.
Captain Spell added: “At LAPD we wish to express our deepest condolences and deep regret for the loss of this innocent victim, Valentina Orellana-Peralta.
“There are no words that can describe the depth of the sadness we feel at this tragic outcome.”
The case is currently under investigation by the California Department of Justice, which has been tasked with examining the shooting involving an officer on the unarmed civilian.
