Kevin McCarthy makes major concession to conservatives as his speaking bid hangs by a thread

Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-California, is making a final push to convince his party’s right wing to support his presidency on Sunday, making major concessions to the group ahead of Tuesday’s vote.

McCarthy’s central concession allows five Republican representatives to force a vote of no confidence in the speaker. He also promised to end the practice of proxy voting and virtual participation in hearings, requiring lawmakers to be in Washington to participate in hearings and votes.

“Just as the president is elected by the full body, we will restore the ability for 5 members of the majority party to initiate a vote to impeach the president if warranted,” he wrote in a letter to his fellow Republicans.

“Congress was never meant for Zoom, and members will no longer be able to phone it while attending lavish international weddings or sailing their boat. We will meet, congregate and debate in person – just like the founders considered it,” he added. .
