“Keechant Sewell is a proven crime fighter with the experience and emotional intelligence to provide both the safety New Yorkers need and the justice they deserve,” Adams said in a statement released to CNN. . “Chief Sewell will wake up each day to her focus on the laser to keep New Yorkers safe and improve our city, and I am delighted to have her as the head of the NYPD. “

The official announcement will be made at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday in a public housing estate in Queens, according to Adams’ office.

Following the announcement of the election, the Police Benevolent Association of New York City, the union representing the city’s officers, welcomed Sewell as the next Police Commissioner, asking him to get the department and the city back on track.

“We welcome Chief Sewell to America’s second toughest police station,” PBA Chairman Patrick Lynch said in a statement. “The hardest part, of course, is being an NYPD cop on the streets.”

Lynch added that New York City cops “are past their breaking point,” adding that “we need to fix this break in order to get our police department and our city back on track.”

“We look forward to working with her to achieve this goal,” said Lynch.

In its own statement, the Legal Aid Society welcomed the appointment, which “hopes to bring a fresh approach to the head of an agency which is in desperate need of top-to-bottom reform.”

“The next commissioner must show that he understands that many community problems do not justify a response from the police; that police misconduct must be taken seriously and dealt with promptly; and that tackling some of our city’s most pressing public safety issues, particularly gun violence, requires full funding of proven community-based approaches, ”the statement said.

“The commissioner must also immediately meet with members of the community to establish real and meaningful avenues of contribution and accountability,” he added.

Adams, who was elected mayor last month, is himself a retired captain of the New York Police Department, who adopted a public safety message and won the Democratic primary this summer by pledging to strengthen and reform the NYPD amid concerns over an increase in violent crime. .

“The basis is security. We can talk about all the other things, but we have to be safe. If we’re not safe, tourism won’t come back,” Adams told CNN’s Gloria Borger ahead of the election. “No business will be left if its employees cannot use our metro systems to get to their offices.”

CNN’s Sonia Moghe and Gregory Krieg contributed to this report.
