Kalvin Phillips could be set to join Manchester United this summer, with the Leeds United and England star on the club’s transfer shortlist as they plan a major squad overhaul.
The Red Devils have also been eyeing West Ham’s Declan Rice and Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and they are looking to revamp their midfield.
However, while the Hammers star is high on United’s wishlist, they view signing Phillips from bitter rivals Leeds as the “most feasible” option, according to reports.
Highly rated Rice has been heavily linked with a move to the red side of Manchester for some time but his new £150million price tag could be a stumbling block in United’s pursuit of him.
The Premier League giants face a similar problem when it comes to Three Lions midfielder Jude Bellingham.
With star boy Erling Haaland’s departure still a real possibility for Dortmund, they are unlikely to want to leave with a second talented youngster as well.
Therefore, a move for Phillips from 16th-placed Leeds seems the most likely.
According to The Sun, the Premier League giants are ‘on the verge of making a move’ for the England international this summer, with the star’s incoming change of agents offering a helping hand.
United’s search to bolster their midfield comes as a host of players are set to head for the exit door at Old Trafford at the end of the season.
According to The Mirror, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata, Tahith Chong and Lee Grant will leave Old Trafford permanently in June when their contracts expire.
Reports also suggest that United’s remaining players have been told they could not leave given the number of departures, although six of them want a transfer elsewhere.
Therefore, if Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag were to succeed caretaker boss Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford, the Dutchman would likely inherit a number of disgruntled players.
It is claimed that Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Dean Henderson, Phil Jones, Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly are all keen to leave the club, with decisions to be made over their future.
It is also understood that the Ajax manager has spotted Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves as a transfer target.
