The mother of an Ontario boy who died after being swept away in Ontario’s Grand River in 2018 has been given a two-year suspended sentence.
The judge delivered his decision on Tuesday morning. Michelle Hanson will spend the first 18 months of her sentence under house arrest and can only leave for specific and approved reasons. During the last six months, she will be able to leave her residence but will be subject to a curfew.
Hanson will not be allowed to drive during his sentence and will have to continue to follow advice.
Hanson pleaded guilty to criminal negligence in operating a motor vehicle causing death in November.
Her son, Kaden Young, three, died in February 2018 when the van she was driving ran through a road closure sign and ended up in the Grand River during a period of heavy flooding. Her body was found two months later on April 21, 2018. Hanson was charged in October 2018.
After the two-year suspended sentence ends, she will be on probation for one year and a three-year driving ban will take effect.
