The battle for the top four in Serie A and a place in next season’s Champions League group stage was opened wide by Juventus’ reinstatement of points deduction earlier in the week.

Massimiliano Allegri previously received a 15-point deduction in January for breaching capital gains regulations, but the ruling was overturned last month.

Juventus had climbed to second place in Serie A and were in a comfortable position to qualify for next season’s Champions League, before this week’s decision to reinstate a 10-point penalty.

The Old Lady fell to seventh ahead of the weekend’s penultimate round, and now sit five points behind the top four after losing 4-1 to Empoli on Monday night.

Sunday’s game is a must for the Torino side, with AC Milan the side benefiting the most from Juventus’ points deduction after being pushed back into the top four.

Juve can close the gap on AC Milan to two points with a win on Sunday ahead of next week’s final round, anything less than three points would spell the end of their Champions League hopes.

Atalanta and Roma are also in the hunt for the top four, three and four points behind. Rossoneri respectively.

Stefano Pioli’s side could book their place in the top four this week with a win in Turin and if Atalanta drop points against Inter Milan on Saturday night.

The Milan side have recovered well from being knocked out of the Champions League in the semi-finals by their rivals last week, winning 5-1 against Sampdoria in front of their home fans on Saturday night.

Juventus have won just one of their last eight games against AC Milan, but have been beaten only once at home since 2011 against the opposition.

Allegri has a very good record against Pioli throughout their managerial careers – the two have met on the touchline on 20 occasions, with the current Juve boss leading the head-to-head 14 wins to 1.
