Jurgen Klopp’s amusing response to Jamie Carragher’s Man City vs Liverpool claim is English football’s biggest rivalry of all time as Reds boss cools talk of Premier League title ‘decider’

Jurgen Klopp has cooled talk of Liverpool’s clash at Manchester City as the decider in the Premier League title race.

It’s become a two-horse race with just one point separating leaders City and the Reds ahead of Sunday’s showdown.

Liverpool and Man City played out a 2-2 draw at Anfield earlier this season and it promises to be another classic

Many are calling the Etihad Stadium clash the game that will determine where the Premier League trophy goes this season.

Klopp isn’t so sure though.

The German told reporters: “I can’t decide what people think, but we can just go through the possible outcomes.

“If we win we’re two points ahead and if everyone thinks it’s done and dusted off then I can’t help them.

“If we lose we’re four points behind and if someone thinks that’s it I can’t change it, but I know no one from Man City will think of it like that and a draw we we are one point behind.

“It’s a very important match. We are really looking forward to it. It’s one of the biggest challenges you can face in football.

Klopp insists title race won’t be over no matter the outcome

“It’s really good, that’s why you do this stuff. Imagine if we were 14 or 15 points behind, it would still be a great game, but something would be missing and it wouldn’t make sense.

“We qualified for a great game with the season played so far and I’m really happy that we can be part of it. I can imagine a lot of people will watch it and we’ll give it a try.

Liverpool and Man City have been England’s top two sides in two of the past three seasons, playing classic fixtures in recent years.

And Reds legend Jamie Carragher said in his Daily Telegraph column that it was the best rivalry English football has ever seen. talkSPORT’s Trevor Sinclair also suggested the same.

Asked if he thought Man City v Liverpool was the best rivalry in English football, Klopp asked: “Who said that?”

After learning it was Carragher, Klopp said: “So yes!”

Whether it’s the best rivalry in English football is up for debate, however, few would have a problem with claims that it’s one of the most respectful.

Klopp and City boss Pep Guardiola have frequently praised each other and the German has reiterated his belief that there is no better manager than the Spaniard.

Klopp added: “Pep is the best coach in the world. I think we would all agree on that.

“Maybe it’s a coincidence that it hasn’t worked out in the Champions League so far, but the things he’s won, the football he’s playing if anyone doubts him, I don’t have no idea how this could happen.

“We all think a lot. That’s why sometimes we make mistakes, sometimes we find the right things. That’s why we try to imagine what could happen, what will help, what we could do to make ourselves more independent of the adversary.

Klopp and Guardiola have a very competitive rivalry but there is also great mutual respect

“At the end of the day there has to be a stop with information because the boys have to play and if I couldn’t help them enough in the week or in the time we are together, we would be a little ashamed.

“Hopefully we’ve been together long enough now and done the right things often enough to play the best game possible against City. That would be the target.
