Jurgen Klopp admits “really bad” Liverpool deserved to lose to Leicester in “very strange game”

Urgen Klopp had no complaints after his side were beaten 1-0 by Leicester in their last game of 2021.

Ademola Lookman came off the bench and scored a few minutes later, and it turned out to be the winner as Liverpool couldn’t find a way to push their way through a Leicester defense missing almost all of their defense from first choice.

Mo Salah saved up a penalty and Sadio Mane missed a huge chance in the second half as Liverpool missed the Boxing Day break. Klopp admitted Leicester fully deserved the three points.

“It was a very strange game, we just weren’t good enough,” Klopp said.

“We still had enough chances. What we did with the balls just wasn’t right. We played a really bad game so it was well deserved for them.

“Our decision making [was poor], maybe a little luck [was missing]. It’s like that. We should have had more of these moments. We had enough to win, but if you lose you need more.

“I think we started well in the second half, then we completely lost our pace and didn’t pick it up. Then they scored. From there, we forced it, so there is nothing more to say. The circumstances above all – Leicester played two days ago, they absolutely deserve it.

“You could see it coming a bit. They had a shot on target. They didn’t have a lot of opportunities. We should have defended better. We usually do, why we haven’t done it today is hard to explain.

The defeat leaves Liverpool six points behind Man City, who face Brentford tomorrow night as Pep Guardiola’s side appear poised to take control of the title race ahead of 2022.

Klopp is convinced his side will bounce back and improve, but has struggled to explain why Liverpool have struggled so hard against Leicester.

“It’s a big gap,” Klopp said. “Right now that’s not my problem. If we play our normal football, Liverpool football, we have the chance to win more football matches.

“A loss is a loss. We have to learn and we will.

“The first thing is to never do it again like this. We lost our pace and weren’t calm enough to pick it up. It’s our fault.

“There has been so much below normal performance, there is no explanation.”
