Fact-checking website Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair was arrested in the nation’s capital on Monday for allegedly hurting the feelings of a particular religious community, police said.
Police had filed a case after receiving a complaint from a Twitter account, where it was alleged that Zubair had tweeted a questionable image with the aim of deliberately hurting religious feelings.
“Such tweets were being retweeted and it emerged that there was a brigade of social media entities, who were indulging in slurs, leading to a possible branching out of community harmony and who are generally against maintaining public tranquility,” the Deputy Commissioner of Police said. KPS Malhotra told IANS.
On Monday, Zubair joined the investigation in a case that was registered at the special cell police station.
During the investigation, the police provided a situation report, in which Mohammad Zubair’s tweet was not deemed objectionable, although subsequent tweets after his tweet led to a series of questionable and derogatory tweets.
“In the investigation of this case, he had already been questioned and the investigation is about to be concluded,” the policeman said.
However, earlier this month, police were alerted by a Twitter handle that Mohammad Zubair had previously posted an objectionable tweet and that his social media followers had amplified and created a series of debates and hate speech in the thread. .
“He was examined in this separate case under Sections 153A (acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony) and 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings) of the ICC and his role was found to be reprehensible”, Malhotra said.
It was officially learned that Zubair was evasive on the questions and also neither provided the necessary technical equipment for the investigation nor cooperated with the investigation.
“During the investigation, the conduct of Mohammed Zubair was found to be questionable, which warranted his questioning in custody to unravel the conspiracy in this case,” the senior police officer said.
The official further said that Zubair was being brought before the magistrate for requesting further custody as part of the investigation into the case.
