Jos Buttler hailed Eoin Morgan as an “inspirational leader” and said it would be “an honour” to succeed his former team-mate as England captain in the limited series.
The 31-year-old was named the new skipper on Thursday, being promoted from full-time vice-captain following Morgan’s retirement earlier in the week.
Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday and the England and Wales Cricket Board wasted no time in endorsing Buttler as his replacement, with the batsman taking over the One Day and T20 teams with immediate effect.
Buttler – considered one of the best white-ball batsmen in world cricket – has replaced Morgan on 14 occasions, including the team’s previous ODI at Amstelveen after the former skipper sat out with a back injury. elder.
He was proposed by director of men’s cricket Rob Key, his fourth significant appointment after installing Brendon McCullum and Matthew Mott in a separate coaching setup and Ben Stokes as test skipper.
Buttler will take charge of 12 games in July, with the T20 and ODI series against India and South Africa, but his first act was to pay tribute to his World Cup-winning predecessor.
“I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to Eoin Morgan for his outstanding leadership over the past seven years,” he said.
“It was the most memorable time for everyone involved. He was an inspirational leader and it was fantastic to play under him. There are a lot of things that I learned from him that I will incorporate into this role.
“It is a great honor to succeed Eoin and where he left English cricket in the clean ball is exciting, and I am inspired for the challenges ahead.
“It is the greatest honor to be captain of your country and when I had the chance to step into the past, I loved doing it. I look forward to taking this team forward.”
Stokes is moving away from the limited overs side to focus on his Test squad revival, but will line up under Buttler sooner rather than later.
“He was the obvious choice to succeed Morgs and I’m really looking forward to playing a few games under him,” Stokes said.
“He’s an incredibly selfless human being, not just on the cricket pitch, so he’s going to get a great response now that he’s officially in charge of the white ball team.
“Jos will carry on the philosophy and mindset that Morgs brought to us from 2015. It’s time for Jos to take the team forward.”
