Oliver played a clip of the Fox News host indulging in fear of crime during a segment on bail reform. A guest claimed – wrongly – that bail reform in New York was causing an increase in crime.
“It seems so clear that it is,” agreed Carlson.
“Wow,” Oliver replied, referencing the Fox News host’s constantly bewildered facial expression: “I’m honestly surprised that anything seems clear for a man with a resting concussion face. Honestly, he has l looking like he was studying a full mirror desperately trying to find his penis.
Oliver has lashed out at Carlson a lot over the years, calling the right-wing host a “total fucking moron” for having an on-air meltdown on “Sesame Street” in 2020 and last year calling him a “super-spreader” for his anti-vaxxer talking points.
But the heart of Oliver’s Sunday night show wasn’t Carlson or Fox News. It was a much bigger issue: a cash deposit.
“Cash bail is arbitrary, destructive and fundamentally criminalizes poverty,” he said, pointing out that the practice keeps the poor in jail for long periods without trial.
