Joe Biden will campaign for struggling Democrats in Southern California

President Joe Biden will arrive in Southern California on Thursday as part of a two-day campaign to campaign for beleaguered Democrats in Southern California, where incumbents once thought safe are suddenly confronted in “toss-up” races against the rising Republicans.

Biden will host a get-out-the-vote (GOTV) rally in Oceanside, Calif., for Rep. Mike Levin (D-CA), who represents a coastal district, the 49th, stretching from San Juan Capistrano in the county of Orange in the north to Del Mar in San Diego County in the south.

Levin won in 2018 in a district that was becoming increasingly liberal as coastal elites shifted left across the country. Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), who barely won re-election in 2016, retired (and returned in 2020 to a more conservative inner district).

A former executive director of the Orange County Democratic Party, Levin brought leftist politics to the district. He aligned himself with the left of the party and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who campaigned for him in the 2018 congressional race.

As Breitbart News reported:

Levin’s leftist policies are little different from those of Senator Sanders or “democratic socialist” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. He says he will “strongly defend Medicare for All” if elected. He rejects a border wall and asks for amnesty for “undocumented”. He lobbies for gun control and is apparently eager to do the bidding for teachers’ unions, openly opposing what he calls the “desire to privatize public education” (although he has himself attended Loyola High School in Los Angeles).

Now, after the redistricting, Levin faces a more competitive district — and a more competitive year, in which voters even in California reject “woke” policies and politicians, and in which support for candidates Republicans increases in the last few weeks.

Levin is being challenged by Republican Brian Maryott, who came a distant second in June’s “jungle” primary but is threatening to unseat the two-term incumbent. Cook’s political report calls CA-49 a “hit and miss,” along with Rep. Katie Porter’s (D-CA) CA-47.
