President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver remarks at the United States Capitol Thursday morning, commemorating the first anniversary of the deadly attack on the building.
The Senate will sit, but the House will not. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) Said there would nonetheless be events to mark the day, including a prayer vigil, a minute of silence on the floor of the House and a conversation between historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Jon Meacham “to establish and preserve the January 6 account.
Lawmakers will also be invited to share their memories and stories of the attack, an event chaired by Rep. Jason Crow (D-Colo.). Crow is part of an informal group of members known as the “Gallery Group” – lawmakers who were stuck in the Gallery of the House as the attack unfolded. He was captured in a photo from that day comforting Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.).
Former President Donald Trump will also speak on Thursday at a press conference that evening in Mar-a-Lago.
On January 6 last year, Trump urged his supporters to march to Capitol Hill and prevent lawmakers and his own vice president from certifying election results for Biden.
Since then, Trump has continued to insist that the 2020 election was stolen from him, and he said the “real insurgency” happened on November 3 – election day, when he lost and not January 6th.
