Jimmy Garoppolo injured his right thumb in Thursday night’s 49ers game against the Titans, leaving his status for the San Francisco Week 17 contest (and beyond) uncertain.
Garoppolo was sacked in the second quarter of the 20-17 loss to the Titans, and the 49ers believed he suffered a sprained right thumb. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday that it was “a more serious injury”.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided additional information on the injury on Monday night, revealing Garoppolo suffered from a chipped bone and torn ligament in his thumb. San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan said the team will reassess Garoppolo on Wednesday to see if he can play against the Texans on Sunday.

Based on his stats against the Titans, Garoppolo’s thumb injury didn’t seem to have as much of an impact on his performance, although it’s not clear to what extent the injury could affect his ability to throw the ball. forward.

If Garoppolo sits against the Texans, 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance will only be making his second start this season. Lance completed 25 of 48 passes for 354 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in five games.

Garoppolo is now the third starting quarterback this season to sustain a serious finger injury. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson missed four games with a mallet finger injury, marking the first time in his Seattle career that he has not started a game.
