Australia striker Sam Kerr has signed a new two-year contract extension with Chelsea, keeping her at the club until the summer of 2024.

The 28-year-old has scored 39 goals in 47 games since arriving in the middle of the 2019 season and is thrilled to have engaged her future for the women’s Super League champions.

“It’s really exciting,” Kerr said. “I’m really happy at the club. We have had good success. Being at a club like Chelsea is an incredible opportunity. The timing was right. I really feel comfortable being here. I think the club gives me every chance to succeed as a player. I don’t see myself going anywhere else in the world or leaving Europe, having what I have in Chelsea.

Kerr won the WSL Golden Shoe last season after scoring 21 goals in 22 matches, becoming the first player to do so on three different continents after winning the equivalent awards in the United States and Australia. In addition to personal accolades, Kerr has won back-to-back league and Continental Cup victories and helped Chelsea reach the Women’s Champions League final for the first time in its history. The contract extension comes after she went into double digits this season with her goal in Chelsea’s 4-0 weekend win at Manchester City.

She added, “I’m not going there to win gold boots, I’m just going there to give all I can to the team and help the team succeed and win trophies. I’m not going to lie, it’s good when I win them but that’s not my main goal at the start of the year. It’s a great reward, but if I won golden shoe after golden shoe and no trophy, it wouldn’t be so rewarding for me. That’s why last season winning the Golden Boot and winning the championship was really rewarding because it ultimately meant something.

Meanwhile, Jonas Eidevall called Arsenal’s women’s schedule “almost inhuman” after Leah Williamson was ruled out for the rest of the year with a hamstring problem. The England star, 24, was injured in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Saturday – Arsenal’s third game in six days.

Speaking ahead of his side’s European home game against HB Køge on Wednesday, boss Eidevall said: be back before Christmas. It’s a muscle injury so it’s an overload problem. Obviously we’ve had a very difficult week and no other team in the league has been invited to play on such a tight schedule. It was almost inhuman.
