You may have already asked yourself the question: are the quantities indicated on the labels telling the truth? We answer you.

In all the departments, on all the packages, it is a precious indication: the weight. Pasta, rice, biscuits, do the packaging always tell the truth? Delivering the right quantity, a biscuit factory near Rennes sees to it. On its production line, weighing is automatic. In case of underweight, the package is expelled. The balance is checked once a year by an approved service provider. The regulations allow a small margin of error which differs according to the weight. Between 1 and 10 kg, the tolerated difference is 1.5%.

But according to Foodwatch, a consumer association, mistakes can happen. They are mainly linked to a lack of controls. Next to the weight, there is a small symbol “e”, which means that it is the quantity expressed. It is present when the filling of packets of pasta, rice, or even biscuits is carried out by a machine. It also means that the manufacturer undertakes to carry out regular measurements.
