iPhone 14, new Apple Watch expected

Here are the new symbols of autumn: pumpkin spice and a new iPhone.
On Wednesday, Apple will host its annual September event from its California headquarters, where the tech giant is expected to show off the iPhone 14.
Several other products could also see updates, including the Apple Watch and AirPods. Apple will also reveal details about the launch of iOS 16, the iPhone software update available on all iPhones since iPhone 8.
USA TODAY will provide live updates on this page of all Apple announcements. Here’s what else you need to know about the event.

Subscribe to your iPhone?
A hot rumor that may clear up after Wednesday’s event: is Apple planning to introduce a subscription option for iPhone? Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Apple is working on a subscription service for the iPhone and other products, just like Netflix, Apple TV+ or other monthly services, you subscribe to your iPhone for a monthly fee.
How excited are iPhone owners for a new model?
About 14% of iPhone owners plan to upgrade to the latest iPhone when it’s released, according to a Savings.com website survey. By comparison, only 10% of iPhone owners planned to upgrade to the iPhone 13 when it launched last year.
Of the participants who said they plan to upgrade, the feature they’re most excited about is the improved and faster processors, followed by better storage and an improved camera.
The online survey conducted last month is based on 1,504 iPhone users in the United States aged 18 and over.
iOS 16 release: when can we expect it?
Even if you don’t buy an iPhone 14, you can enjoy the illusion of getting a new phone with the arrival of iOS 16.
This year’s iOS offers a few pretty big features, including the ability to unsend messages or edit them after they’ve been sent. After someone sends a message in the Messages app, they have 15 minutes to edit or cancel it. Important caveat: both sender and recipient of messages must have iOS 16 installed to take advantage of the feature.
iPhone owners can also customize their lock screens with new fonts and smaller widgets similar to those available on Apple Watch.
Last year, Apple launched iOS 15 on the Monday before the iPhone 13 went on sale. If Apple follows that trend this year, iOS 16 will launch on September 12.
How will iPhone 14 affect the prices of older phones?
While the arrival of a new iPhone and its features is a big deal, it’s equally important how the new device will affect how Apple prices all of its older models.
iPhone prices are expected to rise, especially for Pro models that will have better chip performance, said Thomas Husson, principal analyst at Forrester. With rising inflation and ongoing supply chain issues, pricing for older iPhones will be critical.
“The key point to consider is how Apple will move the prices of the iPhone 13 and older lines to maintain growth in a declining smartphone market and to maintain momentum in faster-growing markets like India or Indonesia,” Husson said.
Apple Store: “Come back right away”
As is tradition before an Apple event, the company’s online store is down. “Come back right away,” reads the message. “We are updating the Apple Store. Check back soon. Of course, you didn’t want to buy an iPhone today anyway.
What time is the Apple event?
The event starts at 1 p.m. ET, or 10 a.m. PT if you’re on the West Coast.
How to watch the Apple event live
If you want to watch it yourself, Apple will stream both on its website and through the Apple TV app. It will also be streamed on Apple’s official YouTube channel.
What products can we expect from the Apple event?
iPhone 14. Obviously. Reports suggest that the new phone will get a big camera upgrade and always-on display. No more waking up your phone to check the time. The question is how many models? Last year, consumers chose between the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max.
Apple Watch Pro. The new smartwatch will have a larger screen and a titanium case, reports Bloomberg. It will also have a bigger battery, the report says.
AirPods Pro 2. An updated version of Apple’s premium headphones is also planned, Bloomberg reports.
Who is the keynote speaker at the Apple event?
Think of Apple CEO Tim Cook as ringmaster of the Apple event circus.
Cook walks viewers through the myriad device updates in his portfolio, while other Apple executives and employees explain how these new gadgets will change your life.
And don’t be surprised if Cook thinks the iPhone 14 is the best iPhone ever.
When will the iPhone 14 go on sale?
Apple will unveil this Wednesday. But if history offers any clues, last year Apple kicked off iPhone pre-orders on the Friday following the event, with the phones officially going on sale the following week. If Apple follows this pattern, expect preorders to open on September 9 and the new iPhones to go on sale on September 16.
