The sequels are risky things. At their best, they bring clarity and greater scope to a story. But too often, for the most part, it’s just a repetition of the same characters and a plot with slightly different costumes and sets, recreating what once was. The year 2021, as it slips behind us, has been a terrible sequel. Frankly, in 2022, we don’t need another one.

From the moment the COVID virus and its possible myriads of variants arrived from China, we have made a central mistake time and time again. In our fear, we have taken science for reason. In the desire that many of us had objective rules to ensure our safety and that of our loved ones, we pretended that such a thing was possible. It’s not the reason, it’s faith.

DAVID MARCUS: COVID VACCINE MANDATES ARE AN INSULT FOR POOR WORKERS

Perhaps nowhere was this clearer than in the elevation of some scientists to almost holy and infallible figures while others were at best ignored and slandered at worst as ignorant hacks.

Scientists skeptical of severe blockages and restrictions such as Drs. Scott Atlas and Jay Bhattacharya don’t exactly have their desks on the D train. They are both at Stanford and both are experts worthy of respect, instead they have both been demagoguery as murderers. Grandmother. Never mind that almost everything they said happened comes true.

As we move into 2022 now well into the 21st century, there is reason to be hopeful, even as Omicron rages with so far unseen levels of cases across the country. We are starting to see recognition, even from restrictive figures like Dr “I Am Science” Fauci, that legitimate competing interests such as the economy, the education of our children and, fundamentally, the mental health of our children. everyone, must be balanced with concerns related to COVID.

DAVID MARCUS: COVID HAS GIVEN US A NEW NORMAL AND IT’S NOT BOLD OR BEAUTIFUL

It doesn’t take a lot of cynicism to see that these abrupt changes in attitude are tied to another event slated for 2022, namely the midterm elections. Democrats know they are staring at the barrel of a potential generational defeat. Their best and perhaps only chance to avoid a trip to a political wilderness of Biblical proportions is to bring things as close to normal as possible.

But interested or not, we should welcome Democrats like Colorado Governor Jared Polis who are coming to terms with COVID. Get vaccinated if you want protection, but anyway let’s get back to our lives.

This is really the whole point of politics. When citizens don’t like what’s going on, they start threatening to vote, and that’s exactly what happens.

At the end of the day, to finally turn the page on the 2020 that refused to end, we need more politics, not less. This was another great myth of the pandemic. We need decisions made that reflect the will of the people. We need reason, not false faith in an unrealistic concept of science. Science is a tool, an important tool. But history is replete with examples of use to steal power, subjugate, demonize, and in some cases kill.

Let 2022 be the year of reason. A year of real and careful consideration, not another 2020 or 2021 of hasty bad decisions that hurt more than they help.

In this new 2022 story, let us remember that we all play a role in the functions of our society, not just handpicked scientists. At that point, and for the first time in two years, we will truly be “all in the same boat”.
