In Alsace, arborists used all possible means to fight against the frost, on the night of Sunday April 3 to Monday April 4.
In the middle of the night, in Westhoffen (Bas-Rhin), dozens of candles were lit. It is the last bastion against the cold for these fruit trees. “These are paraffin candles, in small buckets, and we put them in place beforehand. When the alarm goes off, we come and light them”, says Daniel Dettling, arborist. On the night of Sunday April 3 to Monday April 4, the alarm rang very early, at 11 p.m. On their phone, the arborist and his wife scrutinize the temperature, hour by hour.
Cold that can freeze the first buds of fruit trees and destroy a year’s entire harvest. Of the 16 hectares of cultivation on the farm, only one hectare is protected. “We can’t afford to protect everything: we don’t have the physical means and economically, it’s impossible”, says Daniel Dettling. Last year, these arborists had already lost part of their harvest.
