‘I’m a boxer so bring the cash’ – ex-Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe tells Eddie Hearn he wants a boxing match

Former England and Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe could become the latest in a long line of celebrities to take up boxing.

Defoe has been retired from professional football since March 2022 and it looks like he might be interested in taking up another sport in the form of boxing.

Speaking to IFL TV, Defoe said: “I would put the gloves on, no problem.

“Whoever wants it can get it, I don’t mind.

“Eddie Hearn, I’m a boxer so bring the cash.”

Defoe then weighed in on the current state of the heavyweight division amid talk of a Saudi-funded tournament at the end of the year.

In theory, the tournament would feature Anthony Joshua vs. Deontay Wilder and Oleksandr Usyk vs. Tyson Fury, with the winners playing each other.

But, when it came to who Defoe thought would win, he said: “I think Tyson Fury is the best for me.”

“Ring IQ and all, he’s gifted. What he does, I don’t think you can teach, natural, gifted.

“Obviously I love AJ, you have to support all the fighters, but I want to see that AJ fight against Wilder and the Usyk fight against Fury.”
