I ‘fear for the future of this country’ if Trump isn’t charged

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that if former President Donald Trump is not charged, he fears for the future of the United States.

Anchor Dana Bash said, “Let’s start with the work you’ve done over the past two years, the January 6 Committee. It’s over, and it’s now in the hands of the Department of Justice. Do you think President Trump will eventually be charged with crimes?

Kinzinger said, “Look, when I got into this, when we started this process, I didn’t know that. I’m not a lawyer, not a Department of Justice guy. I didn’t necessarily know if he was guilty of a crime or not. Obviously, what he did from a presidential standpoint, from a swearing standpoint, is a problem. As we got into this, I thought to myself, if that’s not a crime, I don’t know what is. While a president can understand an insurrection and not be held accountable, there is no limit to what a president can or cannot do. Yeah, I think ultimately when we get to where we’re going, I think the Department of Justice will do the right thing. I think he will be charged. I honestly think it should be. Everything we found out, from what he did with the Department of Justice to everything leading up to January 6 to January 6, sitting there for 180 minutes and watching this happen in the hope that maybe, just maybe, this last attempt to stay in power will work.

Bash said, “So he should be charged and convicted?”

Kinzinger said, “So that’s my personal opinion. It’s not from a lawyer or the Department of Justice.

He added: “I look at this and say, if he’s not guilty of a crime, I frankly fear for the future of this country because now every future president can say, hey, here’s the bar. The bar is doing everything you can to stay in power.
