Welsh UFC star Cory McKenna is delighted to be able to rank two-weight champion Amanda Nunes and Julianna Pena as colleagues.
The bantamweight duo put it all on the line last weekend in their highly anticipated rematch at UFC 277 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
After causing a monumental upset in their first fight at UFC 269 in December 2021, Pena was unable to repeat the feat and ultimately fell to a lopsided decision loss despite her best efforts.
“The Lioness” was razor sharp throughout the fight and dropped Pena several times, but was unable to finish the impressive and harsh “Venezuelan Vixen” which was covered in blood after 25 minutes of fight.
It seems McKenna was one of the many fight fans impressed with the fight and especially the tenacity of Pena who refused to give up despite looking outmatched.
“I’ll give it to him; Julianna is a badass. I feel like a lot of people would have broken up, so I respect her for that. Yeah, that was a good fight,” the UFC strawweight told talkSPORT.
The currently unranked 23-year-old may be a long way from UFC title fights, but says she no longer admires Nunes and Pena because she considers them colleagues.
“Honestly, I wouldn’t say I admire them anymore,” McKenna told talkSPORT.

“Not in a disrespectful way, I have respect for all these fighters but for me, I find it kind of cool to watch these shows and they’re kind of like my colleagues.
“I’m like, ‘oh, I’m doing this.’ I turned to my friends on Saturday when we were watching it and said, “I’m fine in seven days.”
“It’s cool to watch it. I think every time I watch the UFC now, I’m like, ‘I’m doing this.
McKenna is looking to rebound from the decision loss she suffered to Elise Reed at London’s O2 Arena in March when she fights Miranda Granger at UFC Vegas 59 on Saturday night.
