Marcus Rashford has admitted mental struggles last season were a key factor in his lack of form.
The Manchester United forward endured a difficult campaign after scoring just five goals in 32 appearances as he struggled for consistency in performance.
Rumors suggested that Rashford could have been allowed to leave the club in January and the summer transfer windows, but after Erik ten Hag’s appointment things have improved considerably.
This season, Rashford has already beaten last season’s tally with seven goals already to his name, as well as three assists after establishing himself as a regular starter under Ten Hag.
With his 100th goal against West Ham, Rashford is brimming with confidence and has revealed he’s been in much better headspace this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Rashford said: “It’s a completely different energy around the club and the training ground.
“It puts me in a better headspace and I feel really really motivated now. This is the area in which I was struggling.
“I sometimes struggled with more mental things. It wasn’t really my own performance but other things off the pitch. This is the biggest difference from last season.
“I understand it’s your job to talk about what’s happening on the pitch, but for the players, we have to get into the right headspace for every game.
“Too often last season I wasn’t in the right headspace for games. I wasn’t surprised by some of the things that were happening.
Following Rashford’s admission, Adebayo Akinfenwa says Erik ten Hag must take credit for helping the striker look like “a totally different player”.
Speaking on The Boot Room, Akinfenwa said: “Rashford looks like a totally different player.
“He had no confidence in the way he played last season when now he’s going after people.
“This head, it dives. You didn’t see that with Rashford.
He added: “You can’t tell me Rashford doesn’t look like a different player. You can’t just put it down to fitness as he was racing last season and playing games, but the Rashford you see now looks like a totally different player.
“There is more desire and it looks like he loves football again.
“When it comes back to inspiring players with confidence and making players who are already there better, Erik ten Hag makes the difference.
“The difference is Ten Hag. Even if he [Rashford] had a full pre-season, mentality and confidence are oozing and that’s why we’re giving props to Ten Hag because right now everyone seems different.
“Rashford scores winners and the way he scored was very different to Rashford. It just goes to show that when you’re confident, the world is yours.
