‘He’s a heavyweight’ – Devin Haney joins Vasyl Lomachenko in the ring after his latest win as Ukraine jokes about size difference ahead of possible undisputed clash next year

Vasyl Lomachenko’s victory on Saturday night could have set up an undisputed potential lightweight clash with Devin Haney next year.

After almost a year out of the ring, Lomachenko made a triumphant return with a unanimous decision victory over Jamaine Ortiz at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Lomachenko started slow but did enough to earn a unanimous decision victory

After the fight, Lomachenko was joined in the ring by undisputed lightweight champion Haney, who recently won and defended the titles against George Kambosos Jr in Australia, and the pair talked about a clash for next year. .

“I know if me and Loma were to fight he would be a better version that night, but congratulations and hopefully we can keep going,” Haney said.

Lomachenko then took the mic and made a joke about the noticeable height difference between him and Haney, saying, “Is that a lightweight? No, it’s a heavyweight.

Haney then replied, “In the ring, I’ll show you.”

The Ukrainian started his career fighting at featherweight and he stands 5ft 7in while Haney is 5ft 8in and struggles to hit the lightweight limit of 135lbs.

Prior to Lomachenko’s last fight, he told Top Rank in an interview that he would do “whatever it takes” to fight Haney, saying, “He’s on the A side. That means more to me than for him because now he is undisputed world champion.

“He can say, ‘I don’t need Loma. i can fight with [Gervonta] Davis or [Ryan] Garcia or Shakur.’

“Even if he wants to fight at home, I will go there as long as the belts are on the line.

“I’m ready to do whatever it takes. I don’t like to put the cart before the horse.

Lomachenko doesn’t seem to have changed his attitude, as he said in his post-fight interview: “I’m ready, I’ve told you before and I’m ready for any option.”

“That’s what I like to hear,” Haney replied. “I took the risk when I went to Australia twice, everything George Kambosos Jr asked of me, I signed, so we’ll see when we move on to negotiations.”

As always in boxing, there is a danger that promoters and politics will shut down this fight, but from what the fighters are saying, everything is looking very positive for an undisputed clash to take place in 2023.
