Google TV, formerly known as Android TV, is an operating system (OS) that has largely conquered the market for TV boxes and televisions.

Since its debut, the Google TV interface has seen few major changes, other than a few rearrangements of the home screen and a name change. However, a recent announcement on Google’s developer blog revealed a significant change coming.

An aesthetic and functional change

Google has confirmed an imminent redesign of the Google TV home screen. Scheduled for early 2024this update will introduce circular app icons for all apps.

This decision is not trivial: it meets a specific objective. Indeed, the smaller circular icons will optimize space on the “ For you » of the interface. This optimization will offer users the ability to more easily define their favorite applications directly on the home screen.

Currently, Google TV can display up to 12 apps before redirecting users to a “ See everything “. With the new interface, it will be possible to see more at a glance.

Developer involvement

This change is not without consequences for application developers. They will have to adapt their apps to harmonize with the new Google TV aesthetic.

Google therefore announced this redesign well in advance to give developers time to prepare. Applications must now offer square icons, adapted to the new circular format.

Google also shared recommendations and practices to help them with this process, emphasizing the importance of using adaptive icon principles and vector formats.
