Work is taking place within the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle to ensure that the site can then reopen safely.
The Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, located in Orschwiller (Bas-Rhin), welcomes more than 500,000 visitors each year, it is the most visited monument in Alsace. However, Thursday, April 7, a couple of Spaniards cannot access the building due to security problems. For nearly 15 days, the place has been closed to the public because of a crow, a large retaining piece, which suddenly broke away from the dovecote in the middle of the night on March 25.
A collapse could have taken place, it is currently impossible to reopen the site safely. The workers are working to secure the place before a possible reopening which is essential after two difficult years due to the health crisis. Director of Haut-Koenigsbourg, Bruno Caro remains positive. “Easter is usually the start of the high season so we are still optimistic for the rest of the season”, he says. In addition to the repair work, a global expertise of the castle will be carried out in order to avoid any accident.
