Hall of Fame coach John Madden dead at 85

| News Today | News Today

John Madden, the Hall of Fame coach who has gone on to become one of American professional football’s most recognizable ambassadors, reaching millions and generations, from the broadcast booth and the popular video game that bears his name, is died Tuesday. He was 85 years old.

The National Football League announced his death in a statement.

In his irrepressible way and with his distinctive voice, Madden has left an imprint on the sport on par with titans like George Halas, Paul Brown and his coaching idol, Vince Lombardi. Madden’s influence, imbued with Everyman’s sensibility and peppered with savage posturing and onomatopoeic paroxysms – wham! doink! phew! – made the NFL more interesting, more relevant and more fun for over 40 years.

This obituary will be updated.
