Gunman Kills Four, Wounds Officer in Denver Area | Denver

| Today Headlines | Fox News

At least four people have been killed and three injured, including a police officer, after a series of shootings in the Denver area.

Police did not immediately name the suspected gunman, who was also killed, and said the motive for Monday’s shooting in several locations in and around the Colorado capital was unclear.

Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen told a news conference that there were “four major gunfire locations in the city and county of Denver.”

“This individual was responsible for this wave of very violent crimes that took place tonight,” he said.

After the incident, police said a “full-scale” investigation was underway and details were still very limited.

Pazen said, “It’s the holiday season. Having this type of madness is not normal for our community. “

He said the shooting started shortly after 5 p.m. when two women were killed and a man was injured. A man was then killed at a second location. A shot was fired at a third place, but no injuries were reported.

Denver Police chased a vehicle and exchanged gunfire with the suspect, who Pazen said disabled the police car and “fled to Lakewood,” about eight miles from downtown Denver.

Shortly before 6:00 p.m., Lakewood Police received a call reporting shots fired at a business. John Romero, a spokesperson for Lakewood Police, said one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

A little while later, the police identified the suspect’s car. As the police approached, the driver started shooting and the police fired back, he said.

The suspect rushed into a mall and threatened a business before taking shelter at a Hyatt Place hotel where he shot dead an employee who was rushed to hospital.

“We don’t know the extent of the injuries there or exactly how this person is doing,” Romero said.

The suspect fled and was confronted by a police officer, who was shot and killed. Monday evening, the officer was operated. After further shots with the police, the suspect was killed. It is not known if the suspect was killed by police, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Romero said police did not believe there was an additional threat to the community, adding: “We believe at this point there was only one shooter.”

In the Belmar shopping district of Lakewood on Tuesday, plywood covered some windows of a wood-fired pizzeria. Workers were cleaning the interior.

Investigators were looking for bullet holes in the aluminum window frame of another store. Nearby was a two-door Honda Civic with a bullet in the hood and a flat front tire.

It was the latest of several shootings in Colorado this year. In March, 10 people were killed by a gunman in a Boulder grocery store. Two months later, six people were killed by a gunman at a birthday party in Colorado Springs.

Last month, six teenagers were injured in Aurora in a drive-by shooting.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there were 687 mass shootings in the United States in 2021.
