GOP Vance is nearly 5 points ahead of Dem Rep. Ryan

Republican JD Vance retains a nearly five-point lead over Democratic Representative Tim Ryan in the race to take the open U.S. Senate seat from Ohio, according to Cygnal’s latest poll.

Wednesday’s Cygnal poll showed Vance leading Ryan by just under five points less than a week before Election Day.

The poll showed Vance with 48.7% support from 1,520 likely general election voters in Ohio to the 44.1% who support Ryan. There were also 7.2% still undecided.

Additionally, Vance closed the gap among independents, as 41% said they would support Vance and 45% said Ryan. Fifteen percent of those unaffiliated with a party were undecided.

In Buckeye State, President Joe Biden’s favor is severely underwater, with 61.1% seeing him unfavorably, while only 37.3% had a favorable view of him. Only 1.6% had no opinion.

Additionally, Cygnal’s poll found that 25.6% of likely voters in the general election think the country is moving in the right direction. By comparison, an overwhelming majority of 69.5% say the country is headed in the wrong direction. Another 4.9 percent say they are unsure.

On the generic ballot, a Republican candidate led by about ten points with 51.2% of the vote, while only 42.7% said they would vote for the Democrat. Another 6.1% said they were unsure.

The poll was conducted from October 29 to November 1, with 1,520 likely voters for the general election, and saw a margin of error of 2.51%.

Ohio’s U.S. Senate race is critical to Republicans’ chance to regain a majority in the 2022 midterm elections. With Ohio currently represented by a Republican, it’s crucial that the party retain the seat.

The Senate is currently split 50-50 between the parties, with Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris having the deciding vote. Senate Republicans need to take seats in states like Ohio and Pennsylvania and secure at least one seat to put the GOP back in the majority and hamper President Joe Biden’s agenda.

Ohio’s Senate election, along with other races across the country, will take place Nov. 8.
