Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Arizona) sparked an uproar after sharing an edited animated video on Sunday that shows him wielding swords against President Joe Biden and killing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.).
The lawmaker, who has been linked to white nationalists and other extremist groups, tweeted the opening credits for the Japanese animated series “Attack on Titan,” but was edited to show himself in place of the main character and with the title of the series in Japanese changed to “Attack on Immigrants”.
In the video, Gosar is pictured fighting off the series’ “Titans” with far-right representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) And Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.). In one scene, Ocasio-Cortez’s face is superimposed on one of the Titans. Gosar slices off his neck and kills him. In another scene, Gosar throws two swords at an enemy with Biden’s face edited on it.
The clips are interspersed with actual videos of US Border Patrol agents rounding up migrants at the US-Mexico border. The words “drugs”, “crime”, “poverty”, “money”, “gangs”, “violence” and “trafficking” flashed on the screen with blood spatter effects.
The opening credits of “Attack on Titan” are often parodied as part of a meme.
Gosar has been a staunch provider of conspiracy theories and lies about the 2020 election and was named by the organizers of the January 6 riot on the U.S. Capitol as part of a group of GOP lawmakers who contacted them in the weeks leading up to the attack, according to a recent Rolling Stone report. Gosar reportedly suggested to the organizers that then-President Donald Trump would offer them a “general pardon.”
Gosar was exposed online for appearing to endorse the violence with his Sunday tweet. Ocasio-Cortez responded with a thread noting his ties to white supremacy and calling on parliamentary minority leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) For not overpowering him.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) Said Gosar was “more comfortable with violence than voting”.
Gosar’s digital director, Jessica Lycos, told the Washington Post in a statement that “we’ve made an anime video” and “everyone needs to relax.”
“The left does not have the culture of memes. They have no joy. They are not the future. It is a cartoon. Gosar cannot fly and he does not have a lightsaber. Violence has not been glorified either. It’s about fighting for the truth, ”she told The Post.
Dozens of Twitter users said they reported the video. According to Twitter rules, content that glorifies violence forbidden.
A Twitter spokesperson said the platform had placed a public interest notice on the Tweeter as he violated his hateful conduct policy.
“As usual with this advisory, engagement with the Tweet will be limited. People will be able to Tweet the Tweet, but will not be able to like, reply or retweet,” the statement said.
The post also appears on Instagram; a Facebook spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comment.
