A manifest tells the browser all kinds of information about an extension, from its name and version number to what permissions it will use and what versions of a browser it will run on. New versions of the Manifest file format used by browsers change the functionality that extensions have access to and may force changes. For example, Manifest V3 in Chrome no longer allows a developer to upload code from a remote server.
