Georgia still No. 1;  USC and Mississippi enter top 10


Week 9 was all about surviving the top playoff contenders. As a result, the top eight teams in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll remain unchanged.

Georgia retains the top spot after fending off a late comeback attempt by arch-rival Florida. The Bulldogs received 45 of 63 votes for first place this week.

No. 2 Ohio State was chosen first out of 13 ballots after winning at Penn State. Tennessee solidified its hold on the No. 3 spot with a decisive victory over the then No. 1. 17 Kentucky. The Vols claimed the five remaining No. 1 votes on the eve of their showdown with the Bulldogs. Michigan remains in 4th place after facing foe Michigan State.

Clemson and Alabama, who both had the weekend off, remain steady at the next two spots. TCU sits in 7th place after maintaining its unblemished record in West Virginia, and Oregon remains in 8th place.

Things are starting to change here with former top 10 teams Oklahoma State and Wake Forest each dipping to nine spots after nasty losses. Southern California and Mississippi each move up two spots to claim those top 10 spots. No. 11 UCLA and No. 12 Utah also move up a few spots. Illinois jumps five spots to No. 13, its highest ranking since 2007. Kansas State moves to No. 14 after its impressive shutout of Oklahoma State, and North Carolina climbs to 15th. of the season.

No. 23 Liberty and No. 25 Central Florida join the ballot this week. Cincinnati and South Carolina are feuding.
