Ministers gave general practitioners in England the green light to provide less patient care over the next four months so that they can join the “national mission” to provide emergency Covid booster injections.

Family physicians will spend less time monitoring people with conditions like diabetes and heart problems, do fewer check-ups for those over 75, and stop performing minor surgeries until April.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid and NHS bosses have endorsed the controversial changes so that GPs and nurse practitioners can join the urgent campaign to give follow-up injections as quickly as possible.
