Gareth Bale has been told he will struggle more in the league than in the Premier League as the player is ready to make a decision on his future.

Bale, 32, has been linked with a move to Newcastle, however, it looks like hometown club Cardiff is his likeliest destination.

According to former Bluebird Jay Bothroyd, who has played in both leagues, Bale would have a hard time getting into the Championship despite it being a lower level of football than he is used to.

“46 league games, it will be more difficult than if you are going to play in the Premier League,” Bothroyd told talkSPORT.

“If he went to Tottenham for example, who have world-class players, it would be a lot easier in that kind of environment than in the Championship when you play on Saturday and Wednesday.

“It’s really difficult to play in the league, especially at the end of your career.”

Meanwhile, former Arsenal and England star Jack Wilshere also shed light on the trials and tribulations of playing in the Championship.

“I would actually say from my experience that the pace of the game is faster in the league.

Wilshere played in the second tier at Bournemouth in the 2020/21 season

“Most of my time in the Premier League I played for a club that had the ball all the time, then in the league it was completely different.

“I only played there briefly, but when I first walked through the door [at Bournemouth] I thought, ‘we’re going up here.’

“But we were third and all of a sudden we lost a few points and I think we struggled to get into the play-offs, then the play-offs came and we lost in the semi-finals.

“We were sitting there thinking we were going to go up and then the next minute we weren’t. Players know that anything can happen at any time.

Be careful what you wish for, Bale

talkSPORT understands Cardiff have held talks with Bale’s representatives as they step up their efforts to sign the out-of-contract Welsh captain.

Bale has been linked with other clubs but Bothroyd only sees Bale, who has also recently been linked with a bizarre move to Spanish side Getafe, drawing the Cardiff rookie next season.

“I feel like Bale is watching and thinking, ‘I’ve achieved everything I want in football, I’ve earned the best part of £500-600k a week so I’m financially stable'” , Bothroyd added.

“If he goes to Cardiff and the World Cup with Wales, he would be very happy, he will play for his hometown club and also represent his country.”
