Gareth Bale deals with Los Angeles FC ‘strange’ with MLS season structure but Wales captain ‘gave up club football a few years ago’

Gareth Bale’s move to MLS side Los Angeles FC has raised a few eyebrows, including those of talkSPORT’s Scott Minto.

The winger has been a free agent since early June following the end of his contract with Real Madrid.

Free agent Bale looks set to join LAFC

The Wales captain had been linked with a range of clubs following his exit from the Santiago Bernabeu.

He had been heavily touted for a return to Tottenham Hotspur in particular, as well as the possibility of signing for his hometown club Cardiff City after holding talks with manager Steve Morison this week.

But it appears to be Los Angeles FC who have managed to secure his services, with Bale’s agents confirming the deal is close to being finalized.

LAFC are currently top of the Western Conference and have already added Juventus legend Giorgio Chiellini.

But talkSPORT’s Minto thinks the structure of American football’s season is what makes Bale’s move odd, although he’s not surprised the Welshman isn’t so in tune with club football anymore.

“I think Gareth Bale gave up club football a few years ago.” said the former Chelsea player during the Saturday session.

“I think the fact that he was ready to go to China when he was still in his twenties, I think that’s all pretty telling.

“Everything revolves around his country. It’s about getting fit for majors, getting your country to majors and playing there for a few years now.

He continued: “He’s signed for twelve months, which is a bit strange because it’s halfway through the MLS season, but at the end of the day it’s about getting it right for the Cup. world.

“It’s interesting, I think the [regular] the season ends on October 6, so he still has about six weeks to stay fit somewhere.

“Maybe he will go to Cardiff and train with them.”
