Gabriel Martinelli is set to enjoy the best season ever for Arsenal thanks to the summer signing of Oleksandr Zinchenko after the young Gunners impressed in the Premier League opener

Arsenal fans can expect to see the best of Gabriel Martinelli this season following the summer arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Martinelli helped the Gunners kick off their Premier League season in perfect fashion with the opener of a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Friday night.

Martinelli had his best season last season with six goals and six assists in the Premier League, and will want to improve this season.

It was an impressive display from Mikel Arteta’s men, but one that showed there was still more to come from his new and improved squad after another summer of big spending.

Gabriel Jesus hasn’t been on the scoresheet but has appeared unleashed for Arsenal, possibly having had the chains removed after leaving Pep Guardiola’s Man City.

But it was another former City man who also caught the eye, Zinchenko putting in a confident performance at left-back.

The Ukrainian has always been known for his technical ability but seems to have added a new dimension to Arteta’s squad, forming a powerful partnership with Martinelli on the left.

The 21-year-old Brazilian is still a raw talent, as evidenced by the moment he put what should have been a simple wide goal with a missed shot against the Eagles.

He corrected that with his first-half header to mark his first appearance as Arsenal’s new No.11 with the Premier League’s first goal of the season.

And Tony Cascarino believes Martinelli’s full potential will begin to be unlocked this season thanks to Zinchenko.

“There have been some very good performances from Arsenal,” said the Weekend Sports Breakfast host and former Chslea striker.

“Zinchenko on the ball, I mean, wow. He keeps the ball just for fun.

“He’s so comfortable, and not just at the back, but also in midfield, like a lot of Man City players do.

“Martinelli will never have a better opportunity to have a left-back to help him become a better player.”

France centre-back William Saliba also played the starring role, leading the Arsenal defense in what was remarkably his first competitive appearance for Arsenal, despite having been a Gunners player for three years.

The 21-year-old has even been dubbed ‘young Rio Ferdinand’ and given club legend Martin Keown man of the match on talkSPORT, and Cascarino said Arteta’s decision to keep the youngster waiting for his luck in north london worked. Perfectly.

“Obviously William Saliba will also get a lot of praise,” he added.

“He was at Marseille last year and they had a very good season, they finished second in France and he played very, very well.

“Defensively he was very solid. He looks really comfortable with the ball and doesn’t give the ball away easily.

“Everyone in France couldn’t believe he hadn’t had his chance in England, but if he goes out on loan he does very well and comes back to his parent club as a better player…”
