The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is urging President Joe Biden’s administration to end nearly all detentions of illegal aliens, a plan that would release 30,000 detainees in US cities and towns.
To mark the 20th anniversary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the left-leaning ACLU released a policy memo calling on the Biden administration to end the 287(g) program that allows the agency to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to operate. directly with cities and towns to help turn criminal illegal aliens around quickly.
“Rather than providing proven benefits to law enforcement, these collaborative programs between ICE and law enforcement have resulted in racial profiling: local police are encouraged to stop, arrest and charge low-level against people who ‘look’ like immigrants, with the real in an effort to help ICE deport them,” the ACLU’s brief reads.
Biden’s DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has previously suggested the administration is working to gut the 287(g) program.
Additionally, the ACLU is urging Biden to eliminate most migrant detention centers in the United States that are under contract with ICE. Such a plan would release approximately 30,000 illegal alien detainees in US cities and towns.
Nearly 9,000 of these detained illegal aliens are either convicted criminals or have criminal charges pending against them.
“With its coffers dry, ICE should end private prison contracts, shut down abusive detention sites, and support community-based alternatives to detention that allow immigrants to navigate the immigration system and fairly defend their protection from deportation,” the ACLU said. bed.
Already, the Biden administration has dramatically reduced immigration detention. While approximately 30,000 illegal aliens are currently detained by ICE, that number is far lower than the nearly 56,000 illegal aliens who were detained in August 2019 under the Trump administration.
