Opinion is split on Gareth Bale’s impact if he returns to the Premier League this summer, saying he ‘wouldn’t get a game at Arsenal’.

The former Tottenham star is unlikely to make the switch, of course, but ex-gunner Jack Wilshere thinks it’s an indication the Welshman could be better off elsewhere – although Dean Saunders claims he would start for Manchester United.

Dean Saunders described Gareth Bale as a freak of nature who would come into the Man United squad

Bale’s contract with Real Madrid expires on June 30 and will leave the Spanish champions after nine trophy-laden years at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Wales international has been linked with Premier League returns and, more recently, a move to hometown club Cardiff City in the Championship.

A return to Spurs has also been mooted, but former Wales striker Saunders – who was full of superlatives for Bale’s ability – insisted Newcastle and Man United should be on board to land the player 32 years old.

United are yet to make any summer signings following Erik ten Hag’s appointment, and while the Red Devils are targeting a host of the manager’s former Ajax players, Saunders says Bale would ‘fit’ into their first XI .

He told Jamie O’Hara on The Sports Bar: “I think who he’s playing for, he can score all types of goals, can’t he? Free kicks, headers, tap-ins, volleys. He can score all types of goals, so I think Newcastle will be perfect for him.

“If he was on the bench at Man City he would arrive and have an impact. If he was on the bench at Liverpool he would have an impact. Man United should try to sign him. He has a good attitude. He would walk in their team.

Bale won his fifth Champions League medal last month but could travel to Cardiff next season

A surprised O’ Hara then asked if Bale was ahead of Jadon Sancho at United, but Saunders was in no doubt the Welshman would overthrow the former Borussia Dortmund ace in a battle for a starting spot.

“Yeah, we’re talking about a freak of nature, he’s no ordinary player,” Saunders added. “He’s not like an ordinary Premier League player, Gareth Bale.

“He has five European Cup winner’s medals. He took Wales to the Euros on his own, he took Wales to the World Cup on his own. Eighty-five per cent of the goals we’ve scored since he’s been with Wales he’s been involved in or he’s scored them.

But not everyone is in Bale’s camp as firmly as Saunders, including former Arsenal man Wilshere who has revealed he won’t be taking Bale to the Emirates Stadium – and not just because of his ties to Spurs.

Asked about it on Drivetime, the ex-Gunner replied: “No.

Jack Wilshere told talkSPORT that Bale won’t get a game in the Arsenal squad

“I see the players who would play in this position and they are young players who have arguably been Arsenal’s best players in recent years.

“So I don’t think he would come in, I don’t think he would get a game and if he did I think he would retain one of those players.”

Where Bale’s next destination will be remains to be seen, but regular football and peak fitness levels will be a key factor with an eye on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar which kicks off in November.
