BOONE, NC (AP) – Evangelist Franklin Graham successfully underwent specialized heart surgery on Monday to treat an illness that had developed in recent months, a spokesperson said.
Mark Barber, spokesperson for North Carolina-based Samaritan’s Purse, said in a press release that Graham underwent the procedure at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
In recent months, according to the press release, the son of late evangelist Billy Graham had developed constrictive pericarditis, inflammation and hardening of the sac around the heart that compresses the heart and prevents it from functioning properly.
The operation consisted of removing the pericardium, the statement said. Graham’s doctors expect a full recovery and have assured him that he should be able to resume his normal activities and ministry schedule.
Graham is president of Samaritan’s Purse and of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
