CORNELIUS, N.C. — A former teacher has been arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student, according to the Cornelius Police Department.
Police said they began investigating the relationship on August 2.
Melton resigned after being placed on administrative leave.
After an extensive investigation, detectives were able to obtain arrest warrants for 26-year-old Tyler Dean Melton. Melton was a teacher at Southlake Christian Academy at the time of the incidents, according to police.
An affidavit said Melton and the 17-year-old girl had sexual encounters several times in April in the parking lots of various businesses, including the Cornelius Cook-Out, Birkdale Movie Theater in Huntersville and Hometrust Bank in Cornelius.
Police said Melton was charged with criminal sexual conduct with a student, as well as indecent assault with a student.
Melton was given a $10,000 unsecured bond after turning himself in to the Mecklenburg County Jail.
He hired a lawyer and did not answer any of Channel 9’s questions as he left court.
