Football World Cup: which teams have qualified?

There are only a few months to go until another Men’s Soccer World Cup. Qatar’s 2022 edition will be the first tournament held in the Middle East and the first to take place at the end of the calendar year in November and December.

Eight stadiums will host the event in five cities in Qatar: Lusall, Al Khor, Al Rayyan, Al Wakrah and Doha.

How many teams are in the World Cup?

The 2022 Men’s World Cup in Qatar will feature 32 teams before the field expands to 48 teams for the 2026 World Cup. The FIFA Men’s World Cup has brought together 32 teams for the last six editions from France 1998.

Thirty-one nations will secure the right to play alongside host Qatar in regional qualifying matches. It has been predetermined how many nations will qualify in each region:

  • Africa (CAF): 5
  • Asia (AFC): 4 plus 1 qualifying for the playoffs
  • Europe (UEFA): 13
  • North America / Central and Caribbean (CONCACAF): 3 plus 1 qualifying for the playoffs
  • Oceania (OFC): 1 qualification for the playoffs
  • South America (CONMEBOL): 4 plus 1 qualifying for the playoffs

The two playoffs, featuring a nation from each of four different regions, will determine the final two qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.
