Firefighters battle in vacant laundromat at fairgrounds

Firefighters are battling a fire that broke out Tuesday evening in a vacant laundromat at the exhibition center.
Crews had launched a defensive attack on the blaze near Normandie Avenue and Exposition Boulevard, according to a 7:53 p.m. alert from the Los Angeles Fire Department.
There were 40 people assigned to the fire, said Nicholas Prange, an LAFD spokesman. Firefighters took a defensive position to protect a nearby home, Prange said.
In a picture posted on Twitter by a passing motorist, flames and thick black smoke can be seen billowing from the building.
