Although they were not destroyed during the fire of Notre-Dame de Paris, in Paris in April 2019, the stained glass windows must be cleaned and restored.
While the cathedral of Notre-Dame is in full reconstruction following the fire which hit it hard in April 2019, its stained glass windows will experience a second youth by being restored. Equipped with a mask to avoid lead dust, the restorers do precision work. If the spire of the monument has set ablazeBefore collapsing, this was not the case for the stained glass windows which held firm.
Once removed from the building, the stained glass windows are then transported to eight different workshops present in France. It’s meticulous work that requires patience, but little equipment. To restore these stained glass windows, the employees of these workshops will only use a cotton swab moistened with water and alcohol. “With the cotton, we come to remove the deposit and it really allows us to reread the stained glass and not to see them with a veil in black”summarizes one of the restorers. Our Lady should in theory reopen its doors in 2024.
